Glossary of Digital Camera and Mobile Phone related Terms

Bit - The smallest unit of computer memory, stored as a 1 or 0, or on or off.

Byte - A group of 8 bits

Bluetooth - A short range wireless connectivity solution allowing communication without cables between Bluetooth enabled devices. Compatible devices now include mobile phones and accessories, laptops and other PC related equipment.

Charged Coupled Device - or CCD. A light sensitive chip used for image gathering.

DPI - Dots Per Inch. Defines the printing quality and refers to the number of dots per inch that are used to create an image.

GPRS - General Packet Radio Service is the way that data / information can be sent and received across a mobile telephone network. The system allows data to be transferred quickly and immediately without the need for a dial up modem connection.

Infrared - Allows information to be swapped from a mobile phone to other devices.

Java - A programming language that allows feature rich applications to be written for mobile phones and other devices (such as mobile games)

JPEG - An image compression/storage format - the standard for digital imaging devices.

Mega Pixel A 1 Million Pixel Image. The greater the number of pixels in an image the higher its resolution.

MPEG - Motion Picture Experts Group; MPEG4 is a video compression technology and storage format.

PDA - Personal Digital Assistant

Pixel - A Picture element, or dot of colour that makes up a digital photograph, or a digital screen.

RAM - Random Access Memory, used to temporarily store information

RGB - Red, Green, Blue The format digital cameras use to create all the colours seen on the screen and saved in files.

Smartphone - Mobile phone that includes personal digital assistant facilities

WAP - Wireless Application Protocol; a standard for enabling mobile phones to access the Internet. Allows access to specially designed websites and pages more suitable for the limited display capabilities of mobile phones
